Bill to Create Bike License Plate Program Fails

AB 2303, authored by Assemblymember Chris Holden, would create a legacy license plate to raise money for biking and walking in disadvantaged communities. It would direct the revenue raised to the Active Transportation Program for planning in disadvantaged communities, and creates a new special bicycle awareness license plate and directs the revenue to bicycle education and promotion.

The bill failed when legislators, led by Assembly Transportation Committee Chair Jim Frazier, insisted on following the procedure already established by the Legislature for the creation of special plates directing money to a state agency.

CalBike is now evaluating its options to collaborate with a state agency to create a bicycle awareness license plate.
